Dave Holland, Charles Lloyd lead SFJAZZ Spring 2012 season

Los Angeles may be a generation or so away from getting to the Bay Area in two hours, but jazz fans with a tolerance for commuter airlines or the Golden State Freeway’s straight-ahead charms have a wealth of options with SFJAZZ’s recently announced spring 2012 season.
With construction continuing on the $60-million SFJAZZ Center (scheduled to open next fall), the season will be staged Feb. 9-June 17 at venues around the city, including the Herbst Theater, the Palace of Fine Arts and Oakland’s Paramount Theater. Touching on elements of world music and the songwriter’s craft, the season includes tempting shows with Charles Lloyd’s New Quartet with Greek vocalist Maria Farantouri; the Gypsy-adorned chamber jazz of Tin Hat; a double bill with ensembles led by Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava and guitarist John Abercrombie; and bassist Dave Holland with his Overtone Quartet -- an enticing new group with pianist Jason Moran and the SFJAZZ Collective’s drummer Eric Harland. With any luck, some of these groups will angle their way south as well.
