As the Hollywood Bowl prepares to open its 90th season Friday, this seems like a good time for Culture Monster to take a look at the storied amphitheater’s past. We dug up an assortment of memorable moments and fun facts from the last nine decades. (Think Valkyries on horseback, buried treasure, valuable Beatles and Judy Garland in the rain.)

Above, we’ve highlighted this 1950 Tom and Jerry short, one of many films and TV shows that have been set in the hillside venue. Cat and mouse wage their usual battle of wits and wills, but what really warms the hearts of Bowl aficionados is the way in which the cartoon’s creators depicted everything from the famous shell aglow in the night to the Muse of Music granite figure and its fountain, which Tom passes while making an unexpected whirlwind trip through the grounds.
