Conductor Zubin Mehta, the former music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, received the 2,434th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday. The conductor was in town for a concert with the Israel Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Mehta is the lifetime music director of the Israeli orchestra. The Tuesday concert featured a performance of Haydn’s Symphony No. 96 in D major, ‘The Miracle,’ and Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.

At the Walk of Fame ceremony, Mehta was joined by his wife, Nancy, actor Kirk Douglas and officials from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The conductor, who turns 75 this year, served as the L.A. Philharmonic’s music director from 1962 to 1978, helping to oversee the orchestra’s move to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, where it stayed until 2003.

During Tuesday’s concert, protesters greeted the conductor and the Israel Philharmonic outside Disney Hall, holding signs that read ‘Don’t Harmonize with Apartheid’ and ‘Boycott Israel.’ The concert was intended to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Mehta’s debut in Tel Aviv and the 75th anniversary of the orchestra.

Check back later today for critic Mark Swed’s review of the concert.
