Racist taxi driver can’t spoil SoCal soprano Angel Blue’s Vienna debut

It’s been quite a Vienna debut for Angel Blue, the young, Southern California-bred soprano whose run in Benjamin Britten’s ‘The Rape of Lucretia’ at the Theater an der Wien opera house opened Feb. 17 and will end Tuesday.
First came an outrage: After taking a coffee break during rehearsals on Feb. 10, Blue, a graduate of the Los Angeles County High School of the Arts, University of Redlands, UCLA and Los Angeles Opera’s Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program, got into a cab for a ride back to the opera house.
Instead, she told the Austrian weekly magazine News, she was driven from the cab by a racist hack, with the words, ‘I don’t drive black women -- get out!’
The incident didn’t color Blue’s perception of the Austrian public at large, her Beverly Hills attorney, Don Franzen, said Friday. And since the news broke on Wednesday, he said, the Viennese response has included e-mailed apologies and a bouquet sent to Blue’s dressing room by the local cab drivers’ association.
