Is it on or is it off?

The fate of the Downtown Art Walk took a turn early this week when its board of directors said that next month’s event will take place as scheduled. The announcement contradicts a statement posted Friday on the art walk’s website saying that the monthly event has been shut down until January.

The board of the nonprofit organization said in a release that director Jay Lopez issued Friday’s statement without first obtaining the board’s approval.

In recent months, the organizers of the Downtown Art Walk have been fighting amongst themselves over the direction that the popular event should take. The monthly art walk, which started in 2004, consists of a self-guided tour of galleries located primarily along Spring and Main streets in the downtown area known as Gallery Row.

As of Monday morning, the art walk’s website still stated that the event is cancelled until January and that it will become a quarterly event starting in 2011.
