Now that the Swiss government has freed Roman Polanski from luxurious house arrest, the Oscar-winning filmmaker will soon be able to resume his directorial career that was stalled for close to nine months while he fought extradition to Los Angeles.
According to a Wednesday report from Agence France-Presse, it appears that Polanski’s next film will be the adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s ‘God of Carnage’ that he had been writing while under legal lockdown.
The AFP report this week quoted Reza as saying that the movie will begin shooting in Europe in early 2011. (Culture Monster reported in January that Polanski was writing an adaptation of the Tony-winning play during his house arrest in Gstaad, Switzerland.)
Reza said that she co-wrote the screenplay with Polanski and that the script is being translated from French to English, with the action of the movie set in Brooklyn.
‘God of Carnage’ debuted on Broadway in 2009 and won the Tony Award for best play. It has also received productions in London, Paris and Zurich, Switzerland. The play will makes its L.A. debut at the Ahmanson Theatre in April.
The dark comedy tells the story of two sets of parents who come together when their children get into a playground fight.
Since Polanski is still technically a fugitive, his choice of filming locations will likely be confined to countries that don’t have extradition agreements with the U.S. government. Since 1978, when he fled the U.S., he has shot his films in his native France as well as in Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic and Poland.
The controversial director pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor and served 42 days in prison before fleeing the U.S.
No casting has been announced for ‘God of Carnage,’ but let’s not let that stop us from speculating on who should star in the movie. Featuring four juicy lead roles, the film has prestige project written all over it and offers top-notch actors a chance to show off their comic timing and verbal dexterity.
