Philip Glass, Lang Lang among Pacific Symphony’s 2010-11 season highlights

The Pacific Symphony said Tuesday that its 2010-11 season is set to begin Sept. 23 and will include appearances by musicians Lang Lang, Pinchas Zukerman, Yuja Wang and Kirill Gerstein.

In addition, the season will feature a special set of concerts dedicated to Philip Glass as part of the American Composers Festival 2011. The concerts include performances of Glass’ ‘Passion of Ramakrishna,’ a 40-minute work that had its premiere in 2006 with the Pacific Symphony. The concerts also will feature other pieces by Glass and some by Ravi Shankar.

Concerts will take place at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa.

The season’s first concerts will be Sept. 23-25 and will include performances of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2. The orchestra will be conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero, with Jon Kimura Parker on the piano.

Carl St.Clair, the orchestra’s music director, will conduct Prokofiev’s ‘Peter and the Wolf,’ Ravel’s Piano Concerto and Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ in a series of concerts Oct. 14-16. Pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet will perform as soloist.

St.Clair also will lead the orchestra in a series of concerts that will include Mozart’s Symphony Nos. 34 and 35, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy and the world premiere of William Bolcom’’s ‘Prometheus’ from Nov. 18 to 20. Pianist Jeffrey Biegel will serve as soloist.

In concerts Dec. 9-11, Gerstein will perform as soloist on Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The performances, which will be conducted by Mei-Ann Chen, will also include Torke’s ‘Javelin’ and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, ‘From the New World.’

Zukerman will appear in concerts Jan. 13-15, 2011. The violinist and conductor will lead the orchestra in Stravinsky’s Concerto in D; Haydn’s Symphony No. 83, ‘The Hen’; and Haydn’s Symphony No. 83.

Lang Lang is set to perform a one-night-only concert on Jan. 25, 2011. The program for the concert will be announced at a later date.

Brazilian-born pianist Arnaldo Cohen will perform five of Beethoven’s piano concertos in a series of concerts running Feb. 3-5, 2011. The concerts also will include other Beethoven works, conducted by St.Clair.

St.Clair will lead the orchestra in concerts from Feb. 24 to 26, 2011, that will include Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9. The concerts also will include appearances by the Norbertine Fathers from St. Michael’s Abbey and organ soloist Paul Jacobs.

‘The Passion of Philip Glass’ will take place March 10-13, 2011. Baritone Christòpheren Nomura will perform the Glass and Shankar pieces along with the Pacific Chorale.

From March 31 to April 2, 2011, the orchestra will perform Berlioz’s Le Corsaire Overture, Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, ‘Titan.’ Justin Brown will conduct and pianist Lise de la Salle will be the soloist.

The orchestra will perform Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ and other Spanish-inspired music in a concert series from May 5 to 7, 2011. Carlos Miguel Prieto will conduct.

Wang will perform Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini in concerts from June 2 to 4, 2011. The concerts also will feature pieces by Martinu and Shostakovich, conducted by St.Clair.

Closing the season from June 9 to 11, 2011, will be performances of Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue,’ conducted by James Gaffigan and featuring pianist Orion Weiss. The concerts will also feature Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 and other pieces.

The Pacific Symphony’s 2010-11 season also includes holiday concerts of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ (Dec. 12) and organ music (Dec. 21).
