Lincoln Center fountain, star of ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘Moonstruck,’ reopens

Near the same spot, Bill Murray spun around in a moment of romantic bliss.

The fountain at Lincoln Center has been a New York icon for decades -- and has had roles in several Hollywood films, including ‘Moonstruck’ and ‘Ghostbusters.’

After 18 months of redesigns and renovations, the fountain reopened this week to the public to much fanfare and publicity. The renovation is part of a larger, multimillion-dollar overhaul of the famous Manhattan performing arts campus, which includes the new and improved Alice Tully Hall, among other sites undergoing refurbishments.

The new Revson Fountain was designed by the firm WET Design, whose past projects include waterworks in Las Vegas and New York. It features a computerized system of 353 nozzles that can spray water as high as 40 feet into the air, according to Lincoln Center.

Other firms involved with the project are Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Beyer Blinder Belle Architects and Planners.

At full capacity, the fountain will be running at just over 16,500 gallons per minute.

The renovation was funded at least in part by a $4 million multi-year grant from the Charles H. Revson Foundation.

The old fountain was designed by famed architect Philip Johnson and opened in 1964.
