The writing’s on the wall in Berlin

Last week, The Times broke the news that Culver City’s Wende Museum of the Cold War, the city of Los Angeles and other civic and cultural entities would erect an art-covered wall across Wilshire Boulevard, halting traffic for three hours in November on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The L.A. Wall Project is thought to be the most ambitious 20th anniversary commemoration outside Germany.

Inside Germany -- as the above photo illustrates -- the public is already getting involved in reexamining, reinterpreting and adding to the original wall in Berlin. At the same time that many professional artists are restoring works that they painted on the wall before it was broken down in 1989, tourists, visitors and others have been invited to write or paint on a remaining part of the former Berlin Wall until Nov. 9, the date the wall came down.

A fixed camera takes pictures continuously, which will be published online to document the art project.
