More than 600 arts organizations around the country can each look forward to receiving a big fat check in the coming weeks thanks to the latest round of grants announced today by the National Endowment for the Arts. The grants represent part of the $50 million in federal aid to the NEA from President Obama’s economic stimulus package.

The new grants, which total $29.78 million, will be dispersed among 631 arts groups in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several territories.

The organizations cover a range of artistic disciplines including theater, dance, opera, the visual arts, classical music and more. Most individual arts organizations will receive between $25,000 and $50,000 apiece, while local government-affiliated cultural organizations can look forward to as much as $250,000 each.

Arts groups in California will reap a total of $4.45 million from the latest round of NEA grants. Among the recipients in Southern California are MOCA, CalArts, Actors’ Gang and the L.A. Chamber Orchestra. The L.A. County Arts Commission will receive $250,000, as will L.A.’s Department of Cultural Affairs.

The NEA said the money is intended to be used ‘to support the preservation of jobs that are threatened by declines in philanthropic and other support during the current economic downturn.’

Other nationally known groups on the NEA’s list include the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, the International Center of Photography, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company.

Today’s news of $29.78 million in new grant money is in addition to the NEA’s April announcement of $19.8 million in sub-grants to state and regional arts agencies. Together, the two rounds of grants represent most of the NEA’s $50 million in stimulus-package money.
