L.A. artists lend a hand to Lance Armstrong

Simply for the names alone, it qualifies as one of the most impressive group exhibitions of the season.
Twenty world-renowned artists are participating in a show at Paris’ Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin called ‘Stages,’ which was organized by the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Among the artists are seven prominent L.A. names: Ed Ruscha, Catherine Opie, Lari Pittman, Shepard Fairey, Raymond Pettibon, Geoff McFetridge and Rosson Crow.
Armstrong asked the artists to create works based on the theme of survivorship, especially as it relates to people who are fighting cancer. The show, which is co-presented by Nike, will benefit the cyclist’s foundation, which works with people afflicted by the disease.
For the show, Ruscha created an acrylic-on-linen painting with the words ‘Vital to the Core’ illuminated by bright rays of light (see above). Other artists chose to depict some aspect of cycling -- photographer Catherine Opie submitted an image of an open country road -- while still others decided to take cancer as their theme.
The show runs at its Paris location through Aug. 8 and will open at New York’s Armory Center on Oct. 2.
