The Orange County Performing Arts Center will bring in an international slate of dance offerings -- American Ballet Theatre (Nov. 3-8), Bolshoi Ballet (Feb. 24-28), Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (March 2-7), the New York City-based Shen Wei Dance Arts (April 16-18) and Nacho Duato’s Compania Nacional de Danza of Spain (May 4, 5, 7 and 8) -- for the 2009-10 dance season.

The Center‘s lineup, announced today, includes one company that also will visit the Los Angeles Music Center in 2009-10 -- American Ballet Theater, next July -- and a troupe that was a highlight of the Music Center’s past season: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, which came to downtown L.A. in March to mark the company’s 50th anniversary.

Two weeks ago, the Music Center announced that its 2009-10 dance season would be composed of five American companies, in part due to a dismal global economy that had limited the number of European companies touring the United States in the coming season.

OCPAC executive Judy Morr told Culture Monster that OCPAC’s ability to bring the Russian Bolshoi and Nacho Duato’s Compania Nacional to Segerstrom Hall was the result of existing relationships with those companies. The Bolshoi has performed several times at OCPAC, and the Spanish company was introduced to Center audiences as part of last year’s low-priced ($10 per ticket) Fall for Dance Festival, as was the Shen Wei company.

“It wasn’t based on this year’s economy; it was based on really wanting to include them for our audiences,” Morr says of the international companies performing at OCPAC in 2009-10. “This is really the concept of introducing companies and expanding to present the whole company when it is possible.”
