The PBS series ‘American Masters’ will present a two-hour documentary tonight on composer Philip Glass. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Scott Hicks, the documentary, titled ‘Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts,’ airs at 9 p.m. today on KCET (also on April 16 at 9 p.m. on KOCE).

For 18 months, the filmmaker followed Glass around the world capturing personal moments (like a ride on the Coney Island ‘Cyclone’) as well as behind-the-scenes footage of the minimalist composer at work. The movie also features interviews with filmmakers who have worked with Glass, including Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Errol Morris and Godfrey Reggio.

Scenes and outtakes from the movie can be viewed on the ‘American Masters’ website.

Koch Lorber is releasing a DVD of the documentary, which will hit shelves April 21.

Glass, who turned 72 this year, was in Southern California in February for concerts in Santa Barbara, where he performed with Patti Smith, and in Claremont, where he performed a song cycle based on the poems of Leonard Cohen.
