‘This Beautiful City,’ a play with music about the impact of evangelism in Colorado Springs, Colo., has added three performances at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City. The new dates are Oct. 14, Oct. 15 and Oct. 17, all at 8 p.m.

So was it divine intervention?

More likely, it was good reviews. Times theater critic Charles McNulty called ‘This Beautiful City’ ‘a diverting if curiously earnest performance piece.’ Writing in Variety, Bob Verini said it ‘impresses as a work of religious inquiry and engaged reportage.’ At LA City Beat, Don Shirley found the play ‘provocative’ and ‘engaging.’

Conceived by the New York-based theater company the Civilians, ‘This Beautiful City’ is based on interviews conducted by the troupe over a seven-month period with residents of the Rocky Mountain city that is home to Ted Haggard’s New Life Church, as well as the conservative Christian ministry Focus on the Family. Written by Jim Lewis and Steven Cosson (who also directed), the show features music and lyrics by Michael Friedman, who also wrote the score for ‘Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson,’ which played at the Douglas earlier this year.

‘This Beautiful City’ runs through Oct. 26 before moving to New York.
