'Legally Blonde' closing on Broadway
Guess those neophyte producers of the proposed new musical based on "American Psycho" should think twice about rushing to follow in the pink pumps of Elle Woods.
The show opened April 29, 2007, to decidedly mixed reviews, with the New York Times' chief arbiter of all things theater, Ben Brantley, saying: "This high-energy, empty-calories and expensive-looking hymn to the glories of girlishness... approximates the experience of eating a jumbo box of Gummi Bears in one sitting."
But soon enough, Elle and the gang were laughing in the faces of the New York naysayers when the musical picked up a surprising seven Tony nominations (No wins, though). MTV got into the act this summer with a reality show to pick a new leading blonde to replace Laura Bell Bundy.
A touring production of the musical began Sunday in Providence, R.I., and will make its way to the Southland in August of next year, first at the Pantages Theatre, Aug. 12-Sept. 6, then onto the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, Sept. 8-20, 2009.
