It looks as if at least one Republican is getting ready to take on Gov. Jerry Brown. Conservative Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (R-Hesperia), a vehement activist against illegal immigration, has told colleagues he intends to make a bid for the job in 2014, the Ventura County Star reported.
Donnelly may not be the ideal standard bearer for Republicans looking to remake the party’s image in the wake of devastating electoral losses over the last decade. Currently, no Republicans hold statewide office in California and their numbers have fallen below one-third in both houses of the Legislature.
In addition to his anti-immigration stance, Donnelly is perhaps best known for his arrest at the Ontario Airport this year for having a loaded gun in his briefcase. In 2006, Donnelly attracted the satirical attention of Stephen Colbert in the video above from “The Colbert Report.”
Donnelly also led a failed effort to repeal a state law that allows undocumented college students to qualify for state financial aid programs.
Brown has not officially announced his plans for 2014, but is widely believed to covet an unprecedented fourth term in office. The governor’s political standing was enhanced this month when he persuaded voters to pass Proposition 30, a series of temporary tax hikes he says will help the state balance its books.
The measure passed with 55% of the vote.
