Jerry Brown, back on the stump, reaches out to young voters

As Gov. Jerry Brown begins to stump for his tax-hike proposal, Proposition 30, he is focusing on a group that does not have a great track record of voting — young people.

Brown will hold his first campaign event in nearly two months Tuesday on the campus of UCLA, followed by other school stops later in the week.

In the run-up to his political reemergence, Brown penned an open letter to university students, urging them to cast their ballots this election.

“California voters will directly decide issues affecting college tuition and education funding, the state budget process, punishment for crimes, and food labeling rules,” Brown wrote. “And the candidates chosen will shape the policies of our state for years to come.”

The governor also touted the state’s new online registration system, which allows Californians to sign up with county election officials via the Internet.
