Cyclists complain of getting ‘Jerry Browned’

Some bicyclists are not particularly thrilled with Gov. Jerry Brown, who has twice vetoed what they call the “Give Me 3” law. It would require motorists to give them at least three feet of space at all times.
Now, cyclists have coined a term for getting clipped or almost getting clipped: “Jerry Browned.”
In Sacramento, a city full of bike lanes full of pedaling commuters, the local alternative weekly highlights the term this week in a story about the frustrations of area cyclists.
A writer at the Bikinginla blog complained that “once more, we’ve all been Jerry Browned by Jerry Brown” after the governor vetoed the measure for the second time.
On the YouTube clip pasted above, you can watch a video of a cyclist being “Jerry Browned” by a Hollywood tour bus.
The governor said in his veto message that the bill, while a worthy effort, would have exposed the state to costly lawsuits. Cyclists found the explanation wanting.
“Concerns about liability were not raised by anyone during the last legislative session,” said a statement from the California Bicycle Coalition. “Nor were they expressed during legislative hearings and floor debate.”
