While most lawmakers are sitting through committee hearings at the Capitol this week, state Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima) is in Mexico.

But this is no foreign trade mission. Padilla is on his honeymoon, his office said Tuesday.

Padilla married longtime girlfriend Angela Monzon on Friday in a ceremony at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles attended by the state’s political elite, including Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) and Assembly Speaker John Perez (D-Los Angeles).

In 2001, at the age of 28, Padilla became the youngest president of the Los Angeles City Council. The MIT graduate was elected to the Senate in 2006. Now 39, Padilla dated Monzon for a couple of years before they were married, said chief of staff Bill Mabie.

Before he left for the honeymoon in Cabo San Lucas, Padilla updated his status on his Facebook page. ‘Just married,’ he wrote. ‘So happy to be starting my life together with Angela.’
