Gay marriage: Appeals court’s ruling on Prop 8. expected Tuesday

The latest chapter in California’s fight over same-sex marriage is expected Tuesday, when a federal appeals court rules on the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that banned gay marriage in California.
A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals announced that a ruling will be made on the case Tuesday. Regardless of the decision, an appeal to the United State Supreme Court is expected.
In August 2010, U.S. District Judge Vaughn R. Walker ruled that the measure, passed by California voters in 2008, violated the U.S. Constitution. Proponents of the measure appealed that ruling.
The panel’s decision is expected by 10 a.m.
