California’s ‘first dog’ gets official Web page (Video)

Sacramento has officially gone to the dogs.
Gov. Jerry Brown has added a biography of his Pembroke Welsh corgi, Sutter, to the governor’s state website. The move would seem to cement the stocky canine’s status as a bona fide celebrity in the Capitol after a legislative session in which he attracted front-page headlines and served as a political prop.
The biography, next to ones of Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown, lists Sutter’s political party as Whig -– “practical and not carried away by the barking constituencies” –- and his religious affiliation as Zen Jesuit -– “although I am not burdened with dogma (but I do like dog bones.)”
The website follows an official Facebook page and an unofficial Twitter account.
The First Dog became a fixture in this year’s budget negotiations, with Brown hoping the canine would help weaken the resolve of Republicans opposed to his tax plan. Back then, the governor joked about Sutter’s early years herding cattle on an Idaho farm. “He likes to make sure everybody’s together,” Brown said. “He’s a role model for more collaborative living.”
As the Times video below shows, Sutter has the run of the U-shaped suite of gubernatorial offices known as the ‘horseshoe.’
Most recently Sutter was seen giving “an assist” to the 73-year-old governor as he did push ups. Don’t ask. Check out the photo posted by Gust Brown on Twitter.
