The first two labor endorsements have been unveiled in the race for a newly drawn San Fernando Valley-based congressional district, where Democratic Reps. Brad Sherman and Howard Berman are competing for the same seat.

Sherman got the nod this week from Teamsters Union Joint Council 42 and also from District Council 36 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. This year’s redistricting put Sherman’s and Berman’s homes in the same district, the new 30th, touching off what is expected to be one of the costliest House races in history next year.

In another intraparty fight for a congressional seat, Rep. Janice Hahn (D-San Pedro) won backing this week from the Los Angeles Port Police Command Officers Assn. Hahn is competing in the newly drawn 44th District with Rep. Laura Richardson of Long Beach and Assemblyman Isadore Hall of Compton, both Democrats. Most of the labor endorsements to date have gone to Hahn, although Richardson recently won backing from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters .
