Proposed cap on university executive pay introduced

The fallout continues over the sky-high salary set for the new president of San Diego State University: Another lawmaker has proposed a salary cap and says Californians should get preference for college executive positions.

Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) joins other state lawmakers who previously announced legislation in reaction to the July decision by Cal State University trustees to provide $400,000 to the new president of the San Diego campus at the same time they increased annual student tuition by 12%.

Lieu has introduced a bill that would limit executive pay to 150% of the salary of the chief justice of the California Supreme Court, bar raises in years when there are tuition hikes, and require the Cal State University system to give first preference in hiring executives to employees of the system, and second preference to California residents.

‘I hope it will put in reasonable compensation levels for CSU executives,’’ Lieu said after introducing SBX1 26.
