Democrats Janice Hahn and Debra Bowen, presumed frontrunners in the already crowded race to succeed former Rep. Jane Harman, announced within hours of each other Thursday that they plan to open campaign headquarters in Torrance on Saturday.

Never mind that the governor has yet to call the special election required to replace Harman, a Democrat from Venice who announced last month she was leaving Congress to lead a Washington think tank. At least half a dozen people already have said they’re interested and are organizing campaigns in the largely coastal 36th Congressional District, which runs from Venice to San Pedro.

Hahn, a Los Angeles councilwoman from San Pedro, and Secretary of State Bowen, who represented much of the district as a Marina del Rey-based state legislator for 14 years, are widely viewed as the ones to beat in this strongly Democratic district. Some observers expect they will wind up in a runoff together under the state’s new ‘top two primary’ elections system.

Bowen invited supporters to her ‘New Campaign HQ Open House’ from 10 a.m. to noon at 1311 Sartori Ave. in the Old Town section of Torrance.

The Hahn ‘Kickoff for Congress and Office Opening’ will begin at noon, less than four miles away, at 2513 Pacific Coast Highway.

At each, look for lots of yard signs, bumper stickers and campaign buttons--and maybe even another candidate or two, come to check out the competition.
