Pension reform probably wouldn’t help the current budget crisis much, but that hasn’t stopped Republicans from targeting what they see as excessively generous deals for government employees. In California, these can include retirement checks larger than workers’ highest-salaried pay. The Times’ Anthony York examines the politics behind the pension controversy.

Also on the pension front, a judge blocks the enactment of Wisconsin’s controversial law limiting collective bargaining for many public employees.
