State controller to legislators: Don't 'hope for a miracle'

January 7, 2011 |  5:16 pm

With December's tax receipts 5.8% below estimates, state Controller John Chiang issued a warning to California's leaders Friday.

"It is clear that next year’s budget deficit will not be solved by a surge in revenues," Chiang said in a prepared statement. "Rather than hope for a miracle, lawmakers must take the tough actions necessary to bring the budget back into balance."

Tax collections in December were $562.5 million below projections.
