Vote from big Democratic counties still outstanding as eager public waits for tally

Early returns show some pretty good numbers for Republican candidates. They show close races for U.S. Senate and governor, even though both races have been called for Democrats.
The projections are based on exit poll data conducted by Edison Research for the National Voter Pool, a consortium of the major television news networks and the Associated Press.
But actual votes from some of the state’s most Democratic counties have yet to be counted. Alameda County, which is famously slow in tallying its vote, has yet to report any hard vote counts except for early absentee tallies. Ditto for San Francisco. In Los Angeles County, ballots are flown by helicopter to the county registrar’s offices in Norwalk. Los Angeles County election officials say they will start posting early vote counts soon.
