Joe Dunn, a former Democratic state senator from Orange County, has had an intriguing career trajectory, to say the least.

He is a former trial lawyer, who, after leaving the Legislature in 2006, became the chief executive of the California Medical Assn. The group represents the doctors often sued by lawyers.

Then in January, he formed a lobbying and consulting firm, the Senators, with former Democratic Sen. Martha Escutia and political strategist Richie Ross.

His newest gig, announced Monday, is as executive director of the State Bar of California, which regulates and disciplines attorneys in the state.

A statement announcing Dunn’s new job quotes the former senator as saying: ‘My life commitment has been to the legal profession, and there is no better way I can think of to show that commitment than to assist the Board of Governors with its work at the State Bar.’
