Sen. Barbara Boxer, a Democrat, and former Hewlett Packard chief Carly Fiorina, a Republican, are squaring off in an hourlong radio debate Wednesday, starting at 1 p.m. But the two candidates won’t be in the same room -– or even on the same side of the country.

Fiorina will be in the KPCC-FM (89.3) studios in Pasadena; Boxer will be in the studios of National Public Radio in Washington.

The format? There will be no opening statements. The debate’s two moderators, Patt Morrison of the L.A. Times and Gabriel Lerner of La Opinion, are planning to cover seven topics, posing questions to each candidate on each topic. Time per candidate, per topic is to be limited to 3.5 minutes.

There will also be closing statements.
