Supervisors look to Sacramento for refunds for Bell residents

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is backing legislation in the state Capitol that would allow Bell residents to receive refunds for overpaid property taxes.

An audit from state Controller John Chiang found that Bell city officials illegally raised property taxes in 2007, imposing a “retirement tax” to cover rising pension costs for its employees. But Chiang said Bell residents were not eligible for a tax refund because state law says such overpayments must go to schools.
