Republican Senate nominee Carly Fiorina, a breast cancer survivor who frequently discusses her experiences with the disease on the campaign trail, had reconstructive surgery Tuesday.

“Carly is in good spirits and is happy to have concluded this difficult chapter in her life,” said Deborah Bowker, Fiorina’s chief of staff. “She is thankful to her family, friends and the many people who have supported her throughout this successful battle. A quick recovery is expected, and Carly is looking forward to being back on the campaign trail in a matter of days.”

Fiorina was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2009 and underwent chemotherapy, radiation treatment and a double mastectomy. After completing treatment in October, the former Hewlett-Packard chief announced she was entering the race to take on Sen. Barbara Boxer.

The operation Tuesday was the final stage of the reconstruction process.
