First Take: Campaign spending reports are in. Californians turn on oil drilling

The new spending totals in the gubernatorial race are in: Over the last two months, Meg Whitman spent $33.8 million -- about double the $17.3 million Steve Poizner spent between March 17 and May 22.

Jerry Brown, meanwhile, after spending a fraction of that amount, still has more than $20 million in the bank.

Though both GOP candidates disparage Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on the campaign trail, Poizner and Whitman sound a lot like the governor at times.

Tom Campbell has a wider donor base than his Senate primary opponents, but Carly Fiorina has a larger war chest.
