The headline of the day comes from our friends at the San Jose Mercury News: ‘Meg Whitman Running Out of Campaign Cash.’

The idea is ludicrous on its face. Could it possibly be true? Whitman, the billionaire who already had put $39 million into her campaign and promised to spend more than $100 million on the race, had -- by the paper’s calculations -- only enough cash in her account to stay in the red for the next two weeks, given the per-day spending level of her campaign since Jan. 1.

Whitman spent more than $27 million between Jan. 1 and March 17, more than $358,000 per day.

With only $4.5 million left in the bank, Whitman was on the verge of being broke by tax day. But fear not. Whitman campaign spokeswoman Sarah Pompei said she was confident that Whitman would open up her checkbook again sometime soon. She just wouldn’t say when.

[Updated 8:50 p.m. The candidate herself later hinted that reinforcements were on the way, though she wouldn’t say exactly when, either. ‘We will be making an incremental investment,’ Whitman said at a campaign event in Redondo Beach on Monday. What constitutes ‘incremental’ in this free-spending campaign? ‘We’ll let you know,’ Whitman said.]
