Libyan strongman Moammar Kadafi appeared on state-run television Thursday to appeal to parents of protesting youths to rescue their children from what he described as a drug-induced plot against the country by Al Qaeda.

The latest attempt by the embattled leader to save his 42-year-old regime from surging opposition forces that now encircle the capital, Tripoli, was aired as protesters were reportedly gaining strength in the town of Zawiya. The cities of Benghazi and Misurata have already fallen to those trying to oust Kadafi.

In his televised address, Kadafi called the protests in Zawiya a ‘jihad’ instigated by Al Qaeda terrorists and urged mothers and fathers to take their children home from the streets and treat them for the drugs they had been given.

‘Don’t let terrorists take over your country and destabilize it,’ he warned.
