Egypt’s army will not field a candidate in the presidential election following the toppling of longtime leader Hosni Mubarak, an assistant to the country’s defense minister told Reuters on Thursday.

There will be ‘no presidential candidate from the military establishment in upcoming presidential elections,’ Maj. Gen. Mokhtaar Mullah said at a Thursday news conference.
