One-hour comedies have a tough time at the Emmys. Only ‘Glee,’ ‘Ugly Betty,’ ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ‘Ally McBeal’ have been nominated for best series in recent years. ‘Ally’ won in 1999, first at the Golden Globes, then at the Emmys. ‘Glee’ has won the Golden Globe as best comedy series for the last two years and was voted best comedy ensemble at SAG in 2010, but it lost to ‘Modern Family’ at the Emmys in 2010. Can it finally prevail in 2011?

Last year, ‘Glee’ won four Emmys: best supporting actress Jane Lynch, director Ryan Murphy for the pilot, guest actor Neil Patrick Harris and for sound mixing. In addition, ‘Glee’ received nods for best comedy series, leading actor Matthew Morrison, leading actress Lea Michele, supporting actor Chris Colfer, guest actor Mike O’Malley, guest actress Kristin Chenoweth, writing and directing.

Except for Harris, all of those people are in contention for the second season, along with an array of other supporting players and big-name guests such as Carol Burnett, Gwyneth Paltrow, John Stamos and breakout star Darren Criss. The Emmys are scheduled to air on Fox in September with Lynch hosting, so that might provide the program with extra awards momentum.
