‘Jimmy, how could you?’ gasped Stephen Colbert on his Comedy Central TV show Wednesday night. ‘We’re competing in the same category!’

Colbert roared at Jimmy Fallon for the fact that a photo of the duo appears in the for-your-consideration DVD package sent to TV academy members by Fallon’s team. Both ‘The Colbert Report’ and ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’ compete at the Emmys in the variety categories for series, writing, directing and crafts work.

‘Including my picture sends the subliminal message that Stephen Colbert thinks Jimmy Fallon should have an Emmy,’ he argued. ‘I do not think that.’

Clearly, Colbert strives for a victory by his own show in the top race for best variety series, but that seems unlikely considering ‘The Daily Show With Jon Stewart’ has won for eight years in a row.

‘Do you think I appear on magazine covers, collaborate with my musical heroes and hobnob with billionaires and presidents because I like this?’ he asked his TV viewers, appearing exasperated. ‘No, I keep pulling 70-hour workweeks and forgetting the names of my children in the hopes of one day I might win the electroplated hand of a goddess siren of prime-time achievement.’
