Time magazine calls ‘Rango’ ‘the coolest, orneriest, funniest, best-looking movie of early 2011.’ Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times calls it ‘some kind of a miracle: an animated comedy for smart moviegoers, wonderfully made, great to look at, wickedly satirical, and (gasp!) filmed in glorious 2-D.’

Assuming it performs well at the box office this weekend, it could become an Oscar contender for animated feature next year. But will it make the cut? Competition will be fierce, especially if fewer than 16 titles qualify, thus shrinking the list of nominees to three, as occurred this year. Upcoming competition for those slots include Pixar’s ‘Cars 2,’ ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’ and ‘Puss in Boots’ from Dreamworks and two releases from Sony Animation: ‘The Smurfs’ and ‘Arthur Christmas.’
