Not surprisingly, we’re seeing quite a bit of black on the 2012 Grammy Awards red carpet so far. Black is of course a quintessentially rock ‘n’ roll color, but musicians and attendees seem to also be expressing the somber sentiments surrounding Whitney Houston’s death.

Each member of Sum 41 is garbed in a skinny black suit, E! host Giuliana Rancic chose a satin, asymmetrically draped cocktail dress by Georges Chakra Couture, country musician Joy Williams -- from the band Civil Wars, nominated for country duo/group performance -- is in a black crepe gown with a Chantilly lace single sleeve from Edition by Georges Chakra and Corinne Bailey Rae is wearing a floaty, black dress with a ruffled black skirt by Christian Siriano.

But this is the Grammys, and there are bound to be some pops and flashes of color, sparkle and quirky details to come.

The awards host LL Cool J (the Grammys’ first host in seven years) has been the most dapper man (dressed in all black) to hit the carpet, wearing a black velvet Giorgio Armani double-breasted evening jacket with grosgrain lapels along with classic evening pants. He’s also rocking his signature newsboy cap, which he’s managed to seamlessly elevate to work with his rich ensemble.
