MAC Cosmetics is turning its e-commerce into a social event.

On Friday, the makeup line launched MAC Shop Together, which lets friends shop for makeup online together -- facilitating real-time, synchronized shopping sessions through a proprietary instant- messaging application.

To get in on the group fun, all you need to do is create a screen name, log in, then notify your gal pals when you’ll be perusing the collections. Like buying by consensus? Users can chat with up to five friends, and will have the ability to invite friends to join them via Facebook, Twitter, email and IM.

The chatty new technology is the first of its kind for a large beauty brand, and MAC has exclusive use of it for the next six months.

MAC has over 1.7 million Facebook followers -- compared with Bobbi Brown’s 80,968 fans, and Clarins’ 54,957 -- so is perfectly poised to create major avenues for online interaction.
