The Shop at the Standard Hotel reopens with hip local merchandise

August 10, 2010 |  6:06 am

Shop The rooftop bar with panoramic views of downtown L.A. isn't the only reason to frequent the Standard anymore. The hipster hotel has recently relaunched the Shop, a jewel box of a retail boutique that specializes in limited-edition items from edgy local designers. It's part of a trend of hotel gift shops going glam that Times Fashion Critic Booth Moore wrote about recently.

The 144-square-foot store, which shares space with Rudy's Barbershop on the ground floor, has also received a chic face-lift, spearheaded by Andre Balazs Properties and L.A.-based design firm Commune.

The new interiors were inspired by the spartan, modern architecture of the surrounding Claud Beelman-designed hotel and feature high-gloss magenta lacquer cabinetry, a forest-green marble floor and a glass, psychedelic-feeling mural depicting downtown's skyline by local design studio National Forest.

The gift-y merchandise includes leather clutches and totes from local handbag designers Clare Vivier and Alice Park, the Quiksilver x Standard bikini and board short collection, fragrances by A Perfume Organic, jewelry from A Peace Treaty, Bing Bang by Anna Sheffield and L.A.'s Smith by Zoe Chicco, sneakers and slip-on shoes from Keds and Toms and all manner of stylish knick-knacks (Lomography cameras, Urbanears headphones, Wool and the Gang knit kits, to name a few).

The Shop is at 550 South Flower (Flower at Sixth Street), and is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m  to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
