To promote Monday’s rollout of its new Fresh Collection antiperspirant/deodorant collection -- inspired by and named for such far-flung locales as Fiji, the Matterhorn, Denali and Cyprus -- Procter & Gamble’s venerable Old Spice brand has announced a competition that will pit two ‘interns’ against each other in two of those places, chronicling their adventures via social media.

The challenges will include donning lederhosen with 10 sticks of Old Spice Matterhorn stuck to the suspenders (and handing them out to others as you schuss down the slopes); weaving a palm frond hat that includes a stick of Old Spice Fiji; and learning to play the alphorn.

In addition, Old Spice has recruited professional snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler and pro surfer Anastasia Ashley, to serve as ‘mentors’ to the interns.

The contest is open to male residents of 49 states (sorry, Maine, for some reason it’s a no-go there) who are at least 18 (with some exceptions, detailed here) -- and have an active personal Facebook or Twitter account. Entries must be received by April 15.

One internship winner gets a seven-day/six-night trip to Zermatt, Switzerland (approximate retail value $9,000) in June, and the other gets a trip of the same duration to Fiji (valued at $8,500).

During their respective jaunts, the candidates are expected to compete in a variety of challenges like the ones above and post the proof using Facebook or Twitter.

Interestingly, the rules don’t include any additional grand prize for the intern who manages to best leverage social media to the benefit of Old Spice.

No doubt, the scent of victory will be its own reward.
