On May 2, Band of Outsiders designer Scott Sternberg will take up temporary residence at Barneys New York Beverly Hills for a two-hour men’s made-to-measure event.

Sternberg, who held a similar two-day event there last March, told me today that he expects two kinds of customers to turn out: “The core customer who is either a big Band shopper and knows exactly what he wants, and the guy who might have been our customer but might just be a little too tall or have a little bit of a belly and couldn’t wear it.”

But the best part – especially for the guy who knows he needs some stylin’ summer threads but is in a quandary as to what exactly that might entail – is Sternberg’s personal input.

“Guys can come and say: ‘I want a suit to wear to this event,’ or ‘I need a jacket for this, this and this event,’ ” Sternberg said. “And I’ll be able to ask them where they’re going and what they need it for. Based on that I can suggest a dinner jacket or a basic black tuxedo, or whatever. It’s a dialogue and it’s a lot of fun.”

I asked him if there was any piece he’d be particularly quick to recommend for the soon-to-be-upon-us summer.

“I’m going with the dinner jacket -- a beautiful shawl collar jacket, in either ivory or black linen with a grosgrain collar. It’s a classic Band piece that I always make and they’re strangely versatile and they’re a really summery thing. “

Sounds like the coolest Band jacket this side of a “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album cover.
