Lindsay Lohan hasn’t been in the tabloids much lately, but last night, the actress did make a very low-key appearance to promote her new line of leggings, 6126. Lohan greeted a group of about 75 fans who waited behind stanchions inside Nordstrom at the Grove. Many of them had purchased several pairs of her second-skin stretch pants -- with the proceeds benefiting Women’s Cancer Research -- and stood patiently, some for more than two hours, for Lohan to say hello.

An alarmingly thin Lohan wore a pair of solid black leggings from her line with a rhinestone studded tux jacket and black ankle boots with jeweled stack heels -- a more subdued choice considering the majority of 6126 styles have animal prints, metallic details or are solid lace. “I was wearing leggings all the time and wanted to improve the comfort,” she said about the beginning of the line. “Chanel did these great tights that I wished were leggings, so Karl (Lagerfeld) said, ‘Why don’t you make them as leggings?’ ” She was also inspired by Azzedine Alaia’s lace leggings, but thought the $1,500 price tag was too steep for most women, so she made a pair that retail for closer to $150.

But why leggings? The super-thin Lohan looks svelte in them, (she wears the size 0 in 6126 and her 14-year-old sister Ali wears the size 1). What about the majority of women who may have a bit more junk in the trunk? “I never liked my thighs when I was younger and I don’t always feel comfortable with my body, so I understand that,” she says. “Pair a big sweater with leggings or layer, that’s what makes them so good for winter.” I’ll keep that tip in mind, should it ever get cold enough here to layer with big sweaters.

As for the Marilyn Monroe references that are threaded through the line (6126 is Monroe’s birthday and there is a style called Mr. President), Lohan sees her brand as a way to keep the late actress’s legacy alive and was very much inspired after re-creating Monroe’s famous and final 1962 photo shoot with photographer Bert Stern in New York Magazine last February.

One fan in attendance, who is probably too young to care about Lohan’s infatuation with Monroe, was a 12-year-old named Edna Cerritos -- a brain cancer patient whom Lohan met while visiting Los Angeles Childrens Hospital. The two became friends and keep in touch through text messages and letters.

Cerritos was given a pair of cropped lace leggings that she quickly ran to the dressing rooms to put on. She plans to wear them on New Year’s Eve. The young fan beamed with joy over her new pair of pants. But are they comfortable? “Uh…,” Cerritos hesitated. “Yeah.’
