Can you believe there isn’t a Brooks Brothers store to be found in all of San Diego County? Neither can we. Well, that’s about to change when the prep staple, inventor of the button-down dress shirt and clothier to American presidents from Abraham Lincoln to Bill Clinton opens in La Jolla on Nov. 20.

The 14,000-square-foot store is taking up residence in the Wall Street space formerly occupied by a Saks Fifth Avenue department store, and is expected to serve up the label’s full men’s and women’s collections, the Country Club Collection and the Black Fleece collection designed by Thom Browne.

Grand-opening bashes are traditionally guest-list only affairs, but to mark their arrival in sunny San Diego County, the Brooks Brothers brass has decided to throw a grand-opening bash that will be open to the general public. What does that mean, exactly? It means in addition to cocktails and hor d’oeuvres (who doesn’t like to shop with a Chardonnay in one hand and a canape in the other?), anyone who darkens the doorstep between 6 and 8 p.m. on Thursday (Nov. 20) will be able to save 15% on their purchases.

And if La Jollans and San Diegans (La Jollites? San Diegoers?) needed even a teeny, tiny bit more motivation to open their wallets, 10% of the evenings sales will be donated to a local charity --- the Scripps Cancer Center, Stevens Division. If you plan on heading over to get your shop on for a good cause, just be sure to call the RSVP line at (800) 274-1815 so your name is on the list (you wouldn’t want them to run out of canapes, would you?).

Brooks Brothers, 1055 Wall Street, La Jolla, (858) 456-2104, open Monday to Saturday 10-7, Sunday 12-7.
