Went to the one year anniversary art show/party for bijoux bookstore Family on Fairfax Boulevard on Thursday night. Great fun, decent art and the Rage spotted filmmaker Miranda July in the throng. The crowd was thick with cute, crafty-looking guys wearing beards and blazers. The types who can correctly pronounce ‘gyro’ (the g is silent) and own at least one Jean-Luc Godard film on DVD. And the best part? There were at least 8 said dudes for every girl with Bettie Page bangs. Looking for Captain Fantastic? Hit a comic book shop or eclectic bookstore, like Family. There are a few good ones in Los Angeles. Secret Headquarters on Sunset Boulevard in Los Feliz attracts the smart, confident cardigan-wearing guys who browse graphic novels with one brow cocked. Over at Meltdown in Hollywood, the guys are a little pudgier and might smell slightly of bologna. But hey, these are cute, assimilated guys who can read and like to shop -- well, for comics anyway.
