Richard ‘Duke’ Llewellyn, L.A. Athletic Club official who founded Wooden Award, dies at 93

Richard ‘Duke’ Llewellyn, longtime athletic director of the L.A. Athletic Club who in 1977 persuaded former UCLA coach John Wooden to put his name on an annual award for college basketball’s best player, has died. He was 93.

Llewellyn, a Glendale resident, died Friday morning of congestive heart failure, said his companion Nancy Tew.

Born in Bermuda in 1917, Llewellyn grew up in Los Angeles and was an all-around athlete at Loyola High School and USC.
