Get your kicks

Route66final

It is not so much the motel that makes this photo, but instead the pink-purple backdrop that enhances the neon Route 66 sign that makes this shot so dreamy.

To get your weekend started, to get you revved up for one last August drive, take a look. This picture makes Arizona at twilight look like the only place to be.

Stampede!

Elephants

Ken submitted this photo today, titled "Tanzania Elephant Stampede" and we love it. You can feel the ground rumble and smell the dust, it seems. Everything in shades of burnt reds and sandy browns. It's in the Africa album.

It's a small world after all

Ronald McDonald in Thailand

It's a world of laughter, a world of tears, a world of fast food marketing gimmicks?

Apparently so!  Submitter juana la loca says, "Even a plastic clownish version of the Thai greeting keeps Bangkok customers feeling at home on Silom Road."

Is Ronald different in every country, kinda like Santa Claus?  The mind reels.

That blouse looks stunning on you

cow goes shopping "While shopping for clothes in Varanasi, India, we had to be careful not to disturb this cow who made this store his home," says submitter cynthia.

Well...it, uh...certainly looks comfortable!

P.S.  You're welcome for not using the phrase "china shop" anywhere in this post.  Until now.  D'oh!

I heart Engrish, Part II

engrish rules!

Ummm...maybe I'll just have some rice.

Okay, okay.  And some green tea.

I suddenly don't feel very hungry.

I heart Engrish, Part I

some amazing engrish from the great wall

Submitter Marilyn sends this perplexing instructional information from the Great Wall (her caption, which is maybe my favorite part of the whole submission, simply reads "Huh?").

I guess...thanks for the heads-up?

Check out our great Weird Warnings gallery for more examples of amazing Engrish!

Stand back, it's got that look in its eye

spitting fountain in chicago

The Crown Fountain in Chicago is pretty nutso, am I right?  Giant human faces spitting water at passersby?  I've never seen them in person but I feel like, for me personally, if I wanted to be spit upon I could always go to a family reunion.  (I kid, I kid!)

Have you folks been here?  If so, what's your take on the whole cool-vs.-extremely off-putting debate that's raging in my head right now?

See a video of the fountain in action (might want to turn the speakers down if you're bugged by screaming kids) here.

Don't worry, ma'am, just a routine carrot check

a burro gets his kicks on route 66

Submitter Bob Weverka sends us this photo from Oatman, Arizona, where apparently a tribe of tame(-ish) burros roam the streets.

Above-linked Wikipedia says that the burros are so common that "carrots and 'burro chow'...[are] both readily available in practically every store in town."

Um, how much do I want to stop into my local Target and have the option (should I so choose) of purchasing burro chow there?!?!

Note to self: visit Oatman, Arizona immediately!!!

P.S.  Got your own great photo of Route 66?  We'd love to see it!  Go here to submit (just choose the "Travel" category and "Route 66" album).
