Fruits of the season

Statueofferspumpkinfinal2 Does art really imitate life? In the case of this photograph, I hope that theory is true.

Not sure where this photo was shot, but some passerby made his or her own Halloween holiday addition to the alabaster figure.

Though the economic roller coaster everyone seems to be riding out has made recent times pretty tough, hopefully, as we near Halloween and then rush headlong into the end-of-the-year holiday season, everyone remembers the spirit of giving. And, frankly, enjoys life just a little bit.

Take it from this stone goddess: It really is better to give than receive.

Simple pleasures

Wheelandshadowfinal

As global markets continue to melt down, how does one keep his sanity? In times like these when gas is expensive, food isn't cheap, and extracurricular activities seem to break what's left of your bank, how can you remain calm and carry on?

I saw this photograph, and I instantly had the answer. Ride your bike! With tires pumped up, and the current October weather just perfect for long rides and long sleeves, who could deny that this is an inexpensive, fun solution to hard times.

This picture is also a vision of tranquility.

Fall in L.A.

Fall_in_lafinal

So, September is upon us. Autumn in Los Angeles can vary in its temperament--sometimes hot, sometimes chilly.

Pictured here is the neighborhood of Venice Beach. Colorful, eclectic, a place to see murals, a place to walk your dog. And in L.A., where getting a true dose of the colors of fall (i.e. leaves falling from big trees, think of Vermont) can be a challenge, these red and green buildings on Abbot Kinney Boulevard sure do make a great stand-in.

Los Angeles trans-plants

Birds_eye_viewfinal

Ever go out on someone's balcony and wish you had their view? Check out the photo above. Looks like a dreamy sunset shot. Don't the phone lines and the palm trees provide the perfect man vs. nature contrast?

Funny thing about palm trees: Though they have come to symbolize the laid back, SoCal lifestyle, only one variety of palm tree (Washingtonia filifera) is native to the area. All other palms were, at some point in time, imported.

All-American dashboard

Allamericanphotofinal

Okay, I just down right love this photo. It speaks to my love for all things All-American. Cruising down the street in an automobile with fuzzy dice hanging from the dash! That's classic.

Then, to kick it up a notch, if you peer out of the windshield, you can see a McDonald's in the not-too-far-off distance. Who doesn't love those French fries?

This picture screams: Roadtrip!

And if you want even more shots of roadtripping hot spots, check out what the Los Angeles Times has deemed "Secret Spots of the West." Find the unexpected in ordinary places.

To bring the classic All-American theme full circle, take a spin through this lovely photo gallery of American's most sung about, well-loved stretch of highway: Route 66.

Big dragon smiles

Bigsmilefinal

You know what is coming up in three days? The Olympics. You know where it is this year? Beijing, China.

Check out the Los Angeles Times Olympic Games' coverage here: Ticket to Beijing.

This photo of a fluorescent pink dragon looks like it was shot behind Downtown Los Angeles, but instantly makes me think of Chinese festivals and all the fanfare that will go along with the Opening Ceremonies.

Water, water everywhere

Burstfinal

So, it's the first day of August, and all is well. No earthquakes to report today.

The weather will only get hotter from here on out, until L.A. hits its fall stride.

For your weekend amusement, check out this cool (pun completely intended) photo. Makes you wish for bygone days, when more people were running through sprinklers and dancing in the floods of fire hydrant water.

Randy Lee's caption reads: "a car knocks over a fire hydrant on Melrose Avenue."

Thanks for the refreshing picture.

Wall of sunshine

Yellowwall1

Pablo Picasso's Blue Period was from 1901 to 1904--a time in which he used low lighting and mostly blue paint to create his early masterworks.

If I had to categorize this photo, or if it was a painting, it certainly would be part of L.A.'s Yellow Period. Rarely have I seen such a bright wall in the middle of the city, and the people are almost set as props up against the large, canary canvas.

Literally, this picture is day brightener.

Double Dutch!

Doubledutchfinal

Jumping rope can make your heart beat 180 times per minute.

It’s a creative pastime, where plastic rope slapping sidewalks can create just the right tempo for you to jump and jump and jump, until you need to run out of the ropes, and it is your turn to do the turning.

This is the happiest photo I have seen in a while. Thanks, Luda.

Neon legs

Stockingsfinal

Here at Your Scene, we have a file called "Your Self Portrait." Some submissions look like headshots, other photographs look like they were taken long ago.

This one really struck me. Here, Jeremiah Christopher took a photo of himself on the street. Maybe in Hollywood, outside a stockings store. Bathed in purple neon light, the eye immediately goes to the leggy mannequins, and then we notice Jeremiah, who is clearly taken by what is in the store window as well.

A little history about neon? French chemist Georges Claude created the first neon lamp, which went on display in fair Paris in 1910.

Is it the light? Is it the fishnets? Somehow, this photo is very French.

Even though we can't see your face, Jeremiah, we want to tell you: Sweet shot.
