Hollywood stars getting into trouble with China [video]

The video above shows Christian Bale in a scuffle with  Chinese police after the actor tried to visit a Chinese dissident under house arrest. Bale's dust-up was only the most recent collision between Hollywood stars and authoritarian China, Barbara Demick writes. Here are some others:

In this interview at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, Sharon Stone speculated that an earthquake in China might be "karma" for mistreating Tibetans. Her films haven't been shown in China since, Demick reports. The video aired on Hong Kong television and was later uploaded to YouTube:

Richard Gere has long been unwelcome because of his activism for Tibetan independence. In this Associated Press video, he testifies before Congress in 2008, saying Chinese calls for harmony are a "hollow slogan":

Steven Spielberg withdrew as an artistic advisor to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing in protest over Chinese policy in Sudan. He joined the cause alongside actress Mia Farrow. Here's the newscast that aired on New Tang Dynasty Television, in which Farrow says China is underwriting genocide in Darfur:

Last but not least, Icelandic singer Bjork shouts "Tibet! Tibet!" at a Shanghai concert in a 2008 video from the Guardian. Click here to view the video on the Guardian site.

Dubai Fountain dances to Whitney Houston song [Video]

Arid Dubai uses one of the most famous songs performed by Whitney Houston, "I Will Always Love You," to choreograph displays at the Dubai Fountain, which bills itself as the "world's largest dancing fountain."

Now that Houston has died, the video of the fountains has become a sort of tribute. Watch the waters dance in this video produced by students at the English College Dubai.

Houston died Saturday at the age of 48. Authorities said she was found unresponsive in the bathtub of her suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and an investigation into her death continues.

The news has spurred reaction all over the globe. Former South African leader Nelson Mandela extended his condolences to her family, the Telegraph in Britain reported. When Houston, a staunch supporter of the fight against apartheid, visited Mandela in Johannesburg after he became president, he said he was there "merely to polish her shoes."

The China Daily quoted Song Key, a music mogul in China. "She was a queen on the stage," he wrote shortly after hearing of her death.

And the Times of India quoted a gaggle of Bollywood stars who said they aghast at the news.

"The angels wanted to dance with somebody. So they called one of our best," Gaurav Kapur said.
